You Can't Always Get What You Want

Oftentimes, people tend to focus on things that do not truly matter in life.  The more we get, the happier we will be, right?  No.  The result is quite the opposite.  We find ourselves empty, miserable, and longing for even more.  We focus on and obsess over our material possessions and the superficial: cars, homes, jewelry, money, entertainment, relationships, and appearances.  God calls us to remember “… the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.” (2 Corinthians 4:18).

Pastor Randy reminds us that this life is full of illusions.  Life can be like going to the movies.  The screen is pulled down and the movie projected, but in the end, the lights come on, and it is back to reality.  What is that reality when the screen is removed?  Is it full of the temporary?  Finances, houses, cars, and other materials?  Or is it full of the God the eternal and almighty?  The temporary can and will be taken away.

There is no protection in this world.  Doctors cannot save you from a terminal illness.  Money cannot buy safety, security, and peace.  People can always betray.  God provides the ONLY protection in this life.  Everything else is an illusion, creating a false sense of security and hope.

We spend so much time looking for purpose.  But the purpose we seek is selfish in nature.  Gold built all of us for a purpose bigger than ourselves.  We need to invest in and help others and share the message of love with others.  When we give, we will receive many times over.  Despite this fact, many live selfish lives and seek entertainment to make them happy.

We also think we can provision the future.  We trust in people more than we trust in God.  We try to do everything to help ourselves and our condition until we just can't do it anymore.  When we hit rock bottom, we come to realize that as much as we trust in ourselves and in others to provision the future, God is the only one who can do so.  We should seek the Lord and ask Him to take care of us, to provide us with insight, and have the patience and faith to sit and listen to the message God brings into our hearts.

The Rolling Stones said "You can"t always get what you want, but if you try some times, you get what you need."  Similarly, God tells us that, you can't always get what you want, but you get what is good if you ask in accordance with his will.

"Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.  For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.  Or what man is there among you who, if his song asks for bread, will give him a stone?  Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent?  If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!" (Matthew 7: 7-11)

We need to seek protection, purpose, and provision in God.  We need to remove the screen and illusion and accept eternal reality.
